WHAT IS CETOL LOG & SIDING?
Cetol Log and Siding’s two coat satin finish creates a protective film
which gives siding and logs a premium furniture look while still allowing the
natural character and grain of the wood to show through. The product creates
a durable surface barrier to prevent wood from weathering.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING CETOL LOG AND SIDING?
The High Solids Alkyd formulation means that fewer coats will be needed for
optimum protection and a premium look.
The Translucent Iron Oxide Pigments and UV Absorbers combination gives high
performance UV protection to your wood to prevent graying and deterioration.
Excellent Microporosity and Flexibility prevents blistering and cracking due
to temperature induced expansion and contraction or moisture buildup.
WITH CETOL LOG AND SIDING
LOG MOISTURE CONTENT BELOW 18% IS THE KEY!
Laminated logs: Generally the moisture
content of laminated logs is below 14% and they are ready for immediate application
of Cetol Log and Siding once they have been cleaned.
Kiln-dried or air dried logs: Generally,
the moisture content of these logs is below 18%; however, some logs may have
a moisture content higher than 18%. Therefore, it is recommended to apply Sikkens
Log Pretreatment and then allow a 6 month drying period before applying Cetol
Log & Siding.
Green, wet, or treated logs: These
logs have a moisture content greater than 18%. Therefore, it is recommended
to apply Sikkens Log Pretreatment and allow a 1 year drying period before applying
Cetol Log & Siding.
When Cetol Log and Siding is applied
to logs that have over an 18% moisture content, mold and mildew can grow beneath
the surface of the coating. Also, as the moisture attempts to escape, it can
cause Cetol Log and Siding to lift or peel. When in doubt about moisture content,
use a moisture meter to make certain the moisture content is below 18% prior
to Cetol Log and Siding Application.
HOW SHOULD LOGS BE TREATED
ONCE THE LOG HOME IS ERECTED?
- Clean mud and dirt off logs with
a pressure washer.
- Unless your logs have been pretreated
with borate at the factory, we recommend applying an EPA registered borate
wood preservative treatment such as Shellguard as soon as possible according
to the preservative manufacturer recommendations.
- When your log surface is dry brush
off any residue from the borates and spray one light coat of Sikkens Log Pre-Treatment
on the outside of your logs. This prevents further moisture absorption and
protects the logs while the home is under construction. It also allows for
a six (6) month drying period to ensure all the logs are below 18% moisture
content.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CLEAN
YOUR LOGS PRIOR TO APPLYING CETOL LOG AND SIDING FINISH?
- Spray the surface with clean water,
wetting the wood.
- Clean the surface with a solution
of 4 ounces of 100% powdered Tri-Sodium Phosphate (TSP) or phosphate-free
substitute plus, 1 quart of liquid bleach in 3 quarts of water. Apply this
solution generously to the wood with a garden pump sprayer.
- Let the solution sit on the wood
for 15-20 minutes. During this period, scrub the surface with a hard bristle
brush to help remove mill glaze and/or weathering. Do not let the solution
dry on the wood. Keep it wet.
- Power wash the cleaning solution
from the wood with clean water. To prevent damaging the wood, do not exceed
500 psi. The nozzle must be a maximum of 1 foot from the surface for full
effectiveness.
- Let surface dry for 3 dry days
before application (i.e. the moisture content is below 18%).
- You are now ready to apply Sikkens
Cetol Log and Siding. Apply two (2)
coats of Cetol Log and Siding within four (4) weeks of cleaning the exterior
logs.
SPECIAL APPLICATION TIPS
- It is always recommended to perform
a two coat color test on a sample of your wood. Cetol Log and Siding is difficult
to remove once it has been applied. Before
doing a full application make sure that your color selection is correct.
- New Rough-sawn wood should be
dry-brushed using a brush with stiff bristles to remove loose dirt and fibers,
if debris is still present, then follow the preparation procedures.
- Weathered wood affected with
blue fungi or rust from nails may be treated after the surface preparation
by applying a solution of 4 ounces of oxalic acid crystals in a gallon of
warm water. This solution should be allowed to sit on the affected areas for
15-20 minutes before the final rinse with clean water. Let dry 3 days before
coating.
- Fill all joints, cracks, and
nail holes with a good quality polyurethane or acrylic caulk/filler prior
to applying the coating.
